As you can see from many of our lessons, food has a huge influence on the Chinese language! Many of our greetings, such as “你吃了吗?(Nǐ chī le ma?) Have you eaten yet?” come from our love of food! Nowadays, “你是我的菜。(Nǐ shì wǒ de cài.) You’re my dish” is being used to describe something that suits your taste, or style. It's a flattering compliment. However, if you wish to say that it's NOT your style, you can use the negative form by saying “你不是我的菜。(Nǐ bú shì wǒ de cài.) It's not my style". The literal meaning of “菜(cài)” is “dish.” However, it has been applied to also mean "style". Join in the fun and let your friends know what you like (or don't like!)! An example: Bù hǎo yìsi, Mǎ Lì, nǐ bú shì wǒ de cài. 不 好 意思,马 丽,你 不 是 我 的 菜。 I’m sorry, Mary, you’re not my type. Apply it!
