Stephen Gray's home, a newly acquired vintage airstream was burnt to ashes in the California Tubbs Fire, in October of 2017. 5,636 structures were destroyed, 36,807 acres were burned and there were 22 deaths. The Tubbs fire now ranks SECOND after the current horrific Camp Fire that is still burning! Currently, 15,573 structures have been destroyed, 151,272 acres have been burned and 79 people have been found dead (as of 11/20/2018). It's heartbreaking. I created a painting (pictured at the end) as an homage not just to those whose lives are deeply affected and displaced by the California fires, but to depict renewal, rebuilding and rebirth that can and will exist after this horrible devastation. All of our blessings and more go to those currently being affected by the California fires. The painting is titled "Lost in the Fires" and is the last piece I'll share publicly until my newest painting series "American Displacement" is completed. Please subscribe and follow me on my journey as an oil painter, NSCA-certified holistic fitness nerd/bootcamp instructor, and seeker in life. I so thank you for supporting me in this journey! Julia Haw (b. 1982, Flint, MI) attended Western Michigan University with a concentration in painting and is recognized for creating bold memory-staining works. She addresses personal and immediate social issues, and most presently, global and political issues, and examines such topics as feminism, ageism, memory deterioration, intimacy, death and confrontational experience. She uses oil paint on cotton or linen as her mainstay medium, in order to achieve empathetic coverage of these socially and emotionally shared issues, and has been able to achieve considerable viewer pause through her dedicated work habit, vibrant color choices, straightforward subject matter, and by using people and objects within her community as models. Haw’s paintings tend to function as highly relatable, ensuing discussion amongst viewers, and bringing the public forum necessarily back. The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
