Ann Bloxom Smith is an independent communication consultant, having recently retired after a 28-year academic career at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. A Shreveport native, she earned bachelor's and master's degrees in English literature from LSU, then taught both English and business communication courses at ULM, followed by three years as director of ULM's academic internship office.

Since retiring last year, Ann has increased her consulting work, now mostly editing manuscripts and providing public relations services. She also provides instruction in presentation and leadership methods, as well as business communication and job attainment skills.

Ann was one of the founders of Friends of Black Bayou and still serves as vice president, spending two days a week volunteering at Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge. In connection with her work at the Refuge, she has won awards such as Louisiana Conservation Volunteer of the Year and Refuge Volunteer of the Year. While she was president of FoBB, the group was named the national Refuge Friends Group of the Year.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
