Murray has enjoyed a vastly varied few years in the professional arena after qualifying as an Mechanical Engineer. Biomedical engineering captured his attention led to three years of biomedical product design. His interests include fly fishing, mountain biking and travel. Title and Abstract: The development of a polymer heart valve for emerging markets. Patients suffering from heart valve disease in emerging third world countries face a sad reality. Replacements in the form of mechanical or tissue valves address the medical landscapes of the developed world, and offer little assistance to the sufferers who cannot afford ongoing medical treatment and medication, or have the skills of a competent and experienced cardiothoracic surgeon to perform the procedure. Studies and collaboration with surgeons from across the world have facilitated the development and design of a heart valve replacement made of a polymer and metal combination, offering extended life and the ability to address sufferers in all nations. Manufacturing technology never used in this space before, together with innovative approaches to the surgical methods have allowed for an exciting design with a South African flair. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self- organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self- organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
