Nigeria wheat imports rise as local output stalls

In Nigeria, wheat imports have risen by 31% in the second quarter on increased demand, even as local output falls. Data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows the country imported 1.36 million metric tons of wheat between April and June compared with 1.04 million tons in the first quarter. Local wheat farmers complain that output is constrained by the high cost of inputs such as fertilizer and a crippling lack of access to proper, large scale storage facilities. Nigeria's agriculture ministry had planned to cut shipments by 60% by 2025, but wheat production stood at just 60,000 tons at the end of the 2016-17 season.
