The John Rylands Library is one of Manchester鈥檚 most remarkable historic buildings, created at the end of the 19th century as a memorial to industrialist John Rylands. Designed by architect Basil Champneys in an elaborate Gothic Revival style, the library resembles a medieval cathedral with soaring reading rooms, stone vaulting, stained glass and richly carved interiors. Its collections include rare books, manuscripts and archives spanning many centuries, while the building itself reflects the wealth and cultural ambition generated by Victorian Manchester鈥檚 industrial expansion.
