Defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday put the blame squarely on Congress-led UPA for not being able to make Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) appealing enough for the French Dassault Aviation to enter into an agreement for the Rafale deal. Sitharaman’s comments came hours after Congress leader AK Antony accused the minister for tarnishing the image of HAL. “HAL and Dassault couldn’t agree on production terms… as a result, they could not go together. So doesn’t that clearly say who didn’t go together with HAL, under which government that happened,” Sitharaman said while interacting with media persons at the Indian Women’s Press Corps (IWPC). “To be repeatedly told Oh you haven’t taken care of HAL, if anything, is misplaced,” she said, asking if the interests of HAL could have taken care of even during the UPA regime.
