Prohibition originated, according to www.history.com, in the early 1800s when “religious revivalism swept the United States.”
Massachusetts passed a temperance law in 1838 that banned the sale of spirits in less than 15-gallon qualities. The law was repealed two years later. Then Maine passed a prohibition law in 1846 and other states followed.
