Rinpoche teaches that puja means pleasing the guru’s holy mind. It is not only my long life puja, it is also yours, because it purifies that heavy karma of disturbing the guru’s holy mind since beginningless rebirths. It is the cause to achieve immortal life, to achieve buddha’s holy body for sentient beings. Temporarily it is a cause for your long life. In Lam Rim Chenmo Lama Tsongkhapa gives advice for doing offerings like mandala offering and doing prostrations: if you visualize your body being numberless, covering the whole earth, doing prostrations, you get all the merit. Similarly even if you have just sand, maybe grains, for offering a mandala, if you do it with elaborate visualization with all the riches of the world, you will get all the merit. Purified through these offerings to the guru, you will have realizations. You will be able to change the strong selfish attitude of your mind into cherishing others, developing bodhicitta for numberless sentient beings.
