Polynesian tree snails also known as partula snails were spread across islands of the west, central and south Pacific, but the animals were decimated by the introduction of the carnivorous rosy wolf snail Euglandina rosea- which was intended to remove a previously-introduced species - the African giant land snail, but instead the rapacious predator devoured the tiny native snails.
Of an original 70 species of Polynesian tree snails in French Polynesia, 45 species are now listed as extinct and a further 11 are classed as extinct in the wild by the IUCN. Edinburgh Zoo houses six species in total and Partula snails have been bred at the Zoo for almost 25 years
The Partula Global Species Management Programme that RZSS is part of cares for 17 taxa in 16 European and American zoos, which also carry out and fund extensive field conservation work in collaboration with the French Polynesian Government. As part of this the RZSS regularly sends snails to other institutions so that captive populations are located in more than one location as a precautionary measure.
