While obsessing through a simple test scene of a sporty little space ship, I ended up with a couple of personal breakthroughs: 1. Atmospheric 'Scattering' effect on the Planet. It is not actually Rayleigh/Mie scattering, but I doubt most viewers can tell the difference, and it renders very fast. This is accomplished with some cylinder mapped gradients for color, transparency and luminosity. 2. Interior hangar bays have a cylinder mapped panoramic image on the walls. The geometry is crude, since they were added as an afterthought, but as a proof-of-concept, it works.
