December 13 marks the day when Nanjing, the former Chinese capital, fell in the hands of Japanese aggressors in 1937, and the beginning of six weeks of mass murder, rape and torture that took away over 300,000 lives. This event was later known as the Nanjing Massacre. In 2014, the date was designated a national day to remember the tragedy and promote peace. CGTN’s Xu Mengqi is in Nanjing for a preview of the state memorial, and will relay to Guan Yang, who’s at the 9.18 Museum in Shenyang for the memorial that also starts at 10 a.m. there. 

The 9.18 incident began on September 18, 1931, and was over in spring the next year. It was when Japan used a Chinese dissident bombing as pretext to start a full-scale invasion that led to the occupation of northeastern China. This event marks the beginning of China's “14-year War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression,” according to the latest Chinese textbooks.
