Architect Howard Tanner AM, Senior Consultant with Tanner Kibble Denton Architects (and recent recipient of the Order of Australia) and Dr Rebecca Huntley, Director of Ipsos research, were invited to talk on the topic of The Changing Home: From British influence to Australian aesthetic. Howard began the evening with a presentation on how Australians historically view the rooms in their houses and how this relates more broadly to trends and issues in Australian society. His presentation covered topics such as the evolution of the Australian House, which originated from British prototypes, the origins of the house as a form of shelter, the house as a statement of public pretension and the house as a series of compartments linked by hallways; each room for a specific purpose. Dr Rebecca Huntley then followed with a presentation on The Changing Home from a contemporary perspective sharing research gathered by IPSOS on the behaviours of contemporary Australians in their homes and discussed what these findings say about us and the way we live. Both talks provided a fantastic starting point for the remainder of the talks which feature in the Rooms in the House series.
