The Rose of Mooncoin was composed by one Watt Murphy, who, it appears, came to the Irish parish of Mooncoin and became rather successful as a builder of houses and a school, of which he himself was the teacher. He fell for the local rector's daughter, and the feelings were the same on her part despite her being only 20 and he 56 at the time. The rector however saw things rather differently and had his daughter shipped off to England. Murphy then composed the song in her memory.
