Overheated Fan Belt Forces Nursing Home Evacuation

HARRISON TOWNSHIP -- Smoke forces the evacuation of a nursing home.About 175 patients were escorted from the Riverside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center as fire crews investigated. The culprit, the fire chief said, was an overheating fan belt on the top floor.There weren't any flames, just a lot of smoke. Some residents had no other choice but to stay on the bottom floor until crews could air out the building."We had quite a few medics here just to assist them," Harrison Township Fire Chief Mark Lynch said. "Most of the residents are 70-plus and out here in this 80-degree weather, it's hard for them."There were no injuries reported but some residents were given oxygen for routine conditions.
