CAMARADERIE is the name of the game for the New Zealand Model T Ford Club, say members who passed through Gisborne. A group of 25 Model T and A Ford cars manufactured from 1913 to 1930 departed Gisborne. The group arrived on Monday. Gisborne served as the turning point for the vintage tour, which started in Hamilton on Sunday.

The tour ran through Whakatane, Hicks Bay, Gisborne and will return to Hamilton. Club president Neil Cremer said the group had a blast."We have been treated like kings in Gisborne. and the weather has been amazing. The club is about friends first and we had a great time." Club members attended a dinner on Monday night at the clubrooms of Gisborne's vintage car club. The meal included an early birthday present for Mr Cremer. "I turn 70 in a few days and one of the women dressed up as Marilyn Monroe and sang Happy Birthday Mr President. It was a good night." Mr Cremer owns a 1913 Model T Ford, a car now more than a century old. The petrol tank is located under the seat and the car has a three-pedal system — one to reverse, another to brake and another for lower gears. "They are very safe because if your brakes fail, you can just slam it into reverse. "We will have travelled around 1100 kilometres on this trip. We just love to drive." Hooning up and down the coast can be a bit difficult when most engines from the era peak at around 20 horsepower. The Model T in its day had a rated top speed of about 70kmh. "I can get up to 100 kilometres an hour in mine but I have modified it a bit. My wife does not really like it when I go that fast though. "Mostly, we have all been going along at about 60 to 75kmh. We have just been taking it easy and enjoying the scenery."
