(20 Nov 2018) French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated his support for the creation of an European army on Tuesday, arguing that the continent "must take its destiny in its own hands." Macron and Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel were in Louvain-la-Neuve on Tuesday for a debate with students on the future of Europe. Both leaders acknowledged that Europe is facing crucial times and that as European Parliament elections are approaching, citizens should not support the rise of extremism. Michel stressed "the role of citizens to be mobilised" and "the role of political leaders to be brave and to tell the truth." The debate was interrupted for a couple of minutes by two protesters who unsuccessfully tried to deploy a banner and shouted at Macron before being removed from the hall.
