Carmine learns to go to mat on cue. Building a strong positive association with a mat is useful in many ways: - helps teach "stay," because the dog understands that he wants to stay on a physical item, not just "wait." - once he goes to mat reliably, you can feed him slowly on the mat and work on mat relaxation exercises. When mat = relaxing and taking treats, you can take the mat with you and unroll it in new places, feeding treats and helping him relax in new locations. - you can put the mat wherever you want him to stay in the apartment. For example, if he begs at the table you can take out the mat and put it just far away that he can't paw at you. You must slowly build up the duration for this purposes.
