This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Peter Gero talks about modern urbanism in Slovak towns and their challenges among which is the bureaucracy and the structure of power, introducing eastern-inspired architecture and the disrespect for historical continuity and the subsequent loss of the true cultural distinctiveness of towns. More importantly, Gero emphasises that we must abandon the traditional negativism embedded in society for many years, we must have hope and encourage urban planner who need to feel the citizen’s support.

Peter Gero completed his studies of the Support Structures and Road Constructions at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. In August 1968, he immigrated to Germany, where he continued in studies in urban planning. His professional life is closely connected with the city of Hamburg, whose current design and overall urban development is largely a result of his work. He was working there as a director of planning and development of the city’s central areas for more than twelve years. Peter Gero’s taking part in participation processes with the public and political - parliamentary structures, and mediation of professional relations comprehension in media represented a vital part of his activities, as well. After thirty years of work for the city of Hamburg, he became a freelancer. He teaches town-planning and structure of civic constructions at the Faculty of Architecture of Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava. He provides consulting services for a lot of architectonic and urban offices, is a jury member in various international competitions and professional guarantee of the project Trenčín si Ty (Trenčín is You).
