A mother of a patient explains how her son has had a phobia of going into Day Surgery to have his grommets removed from the age of 3. At 5 years old he was restrained in the anaesthetic room by 7 people which further heightened his fear. A consultant on the day unit has done a lot of work since this episode to encourage him to attend his appointments, such as taking time to get to know the patient outside of the clinical environment and administering pre-meds to allow him to be asleep before he goes into theatre.
