Captured pets on Okinawa face uncertain future

A mixed Maltese dog, caged in December 2012 at the Prefectural Animal Protection and Control Center on Okinawa, Japan, had an implanted microchip indicating she was registered to a member of the local military community. Often, however, pets captured by local animal control are destroyed within days without the knowledge of the military base personnel who own the pets.
