This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this talk, Matt Lavery makes a powerful argument for re-evaluating the way we assess students -- and provides a practical, open-source roadmap to tests that make sense. Matt Lavery became a sixth grade teacher to make a difference in the lives of children and to help them achieve their best. Three years ago he left the profession he loved to pursue a doctoral degree in the hopes of making a positive difference for even more students. A scholar of assessment and statistical methods, Matt strives to help classroom teachers analyze their own classroom assessment data to inform their own professional growth. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
