From the onset of the violence in Libya in February, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has been working to assist people in areas with the greatest medical needs—in and around the city of Benghazi in the east and in Misrata in the west. Teams are also on the Tunisian border providing support to people who have fled the conflict. On April 3, MSF evacuated 71 patients in need of emergency care by boat from Misrata to Tunisia. In the coastal city of Misrata people are surrounded on all sides by the fighting and what health facilities are functioning are overflowing with patients. The population of Benghazi has also been affected by the fighting. In March tensions became extremely heated prior to air strikes against Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi by international forces. With the security of his team in question, MSF's emergency coordinator Simon Burroughs and his colleagues temporarily withdraw to Egypt until they could ensure relative safety. The team re-entered Benghazi on March 26 and they continue to meet emergency medical needs there. Learn more about MSF's work in Libya. Go to msf.org to find the MSF web site in your home country. If you have questions or comments, send an e-mail to [email protected] . MSF, or Doctors Without Borders, is an independent medical humanitarian aid organization that delivers emergency assistance to people affected by wars, epidemics, and natural or man-made disasters in more than 60 countries around the world.
