Four years after Nigeria launched the safe schools initiative-- schools in Maiduguri are holding emergency safety drills for students. Much of the millions of dollars allocated to the initiative has gone towards building higher school walls and other preventive measures aimed at stopping Boko Haram. Unicef says at least 1,000 schoolchildren have been abducted by the extremist group since 2009. More than two thousand teachers have been killed and 1,400 schools have been destroyed. Those teachers who have remained, have had to raise funds or use their own money to pay for security. And, many children are still risking their lives to get the education they need. Chika Oduah reports from Maiduguri.
