TROTWOOD -- It's something Westbrooke Village Elementary Principal Tracy Mallory doesn't like doing but from time to time she has to make calls to warn parents of things her teachers or students say kids are trying.

The principal said one of the recent challenges that she heard about is the ice and salt challenge where kids put ice and salt on their skin to see who can leave it on their skin the longest. She said children are being left with second and third degree burns. Mallory also talked about another challenge called "The Cinnamon Challenge" where children ingest a portion of the ingredient and try swallowing it.

Challenges like these come and go but at times leave behind children who are hurt or seriously injured.

People are not only taking the challenges here in the Miami Valley but we found countless examples posted on YouTube from all over the country.
With a quick search of a few social media sites and ABC22/FOX45 found graphic injuries that would make anyone cringe.

One video shows a teen from Pittsburgh who suffered massive burns after taking the "Ice and Salt Challenge."

There are kids from all over the country, swallowing, then coughing, choking and within a few seconds becoming ill after being overcome by the powerful taste of cinnamon.

"If you have any questions talk to the parents your teachers." It's simple advice from a mother and now grandmother. Majorie Townes said she tells her grandkids to just use common sense, over peer pressure. "Be a leader not a follower you know what is right what is wrong just do that if you follow that program you will be ok," said Townes.

Principal Mallory hopes more kids take that good advice so that she will have to make fewer calls to warn parents of possible dangers.

Experts said the best way to keep up with the ever changing things children are exposed to on social media is to check out what's trending online regularly.
