Inspite of increasing awareness of cancer diseases in the country, Nigeria is said to lose about 300 million dollars quarterly to access cancer treatment abroad. Guests on NTA’s news and current affairs programme; Good Morning Nigeria made this known during a conversation on prostate and breast cancer in Nigeria. While cancer is dreaded, its reality is manifest in the rising cases and high mortality, especially amongst women. But the good news is that one does not need to have cancer, neither should a patient live on die of cancer. However, specialists in cancer management in Nigeria, regret lack of access to basic preventive measures, such as screening centers. One of the guests on Good Morning Nigeria, a breast and cervical cancer surgeon professor, Moses Momoh is therefore advocating free screening programme for women. He said that will enable more women to go for screening and get early diagnosis. The medical experts emphasize on the need for early diagnosis as key to effective management. Dr Bello Mohammed, an oncologist at the national hospital Abuja lamented the lack of a well-equipped center and death of oncologists in Nigeria as another major challenge. Dr. Jeremy Osuide of the park-House clinic Abuja was optimistic that prostate cancer can be effectively managed provided that patients are diagnosed on time. The medical experts identified changing life style, age and genetic hereditary as risk factors for cancer disease. They advised that in addition to frequent screening at designated screening centers, healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables as well as physical exercises are best preventive options.
