Scientists are busy designing shuttles for future space travel. The next generation will be built for missions lasting months or even years. Today's shuttles have a limited range due to their conventional fuel supplies. But the next generation will use new propulsion systems and energy sources to travel much further. We look at the plans and ideas of spaceflight researchers in Germany and Britain. Can voyages into deep space - a commonplace in science fiction - actually work in the real universe? When are physical limits reached? And to what extent do ideas from science fiction inspire actual research? We find out.
