For TEDxDenisonU 2017, Berman is going to give a TED talk titled “The neglected curiosity” to capture his experience and philosophy on life. According to Dean Berman, life goes by in a blink. We each have a unique and powerful puzzle to figure out – who we are and who we may become. We tend, to one degree or another, to fight ourselves in this pursuit. And we allow, to one extent or another, others to sway us, sometimes in the right direction, often not. Like the distance runner pushing past the wall, the swimmer finding her next level, or the gymnast sticking the perfect landing, what are our primary drivers in life, work, relationships, and citizenship? Is there another lens through which we might view ourselves? Richard T. Berman P’05 is Denison’s Dean of Career Preparation and has served since February 2015 in a start-up role with our new Knowlton Center for Career Exploration. Berman joined the University following more than 30 years in career center leadership positions at Oberlin, Carleton, Kalamazoo, and Beloit Colleges. Dean Berman retires at the end of the June this year. He refers to himself as an ‘alternativist,’ turning problems and opportunities upside down to reveal unconsidered possibilities.
