About Object Stories:
Object Stories is a personal storytelling project and exhibition series hosted by the Portland Art Museum. Upon launch in 2010, Object Stories became a first of its kind in the museum field and continues to innovate today. The project has grown the application of storytelling with objects from a way to interrupt the traditional authoritative museum voice into a platform where Portland and the Pacific Northwest’s many communities can directly address issues affecting their lives. Object Stories helps drive the Portland Art Museum to become a safe and responsive space open for dialogue, conversation, and the exchange of ideas.

Object Stories thematic exhibitions change three to four times a year and are accompanied by a rotating selection of multi-sensory activities and “calls to action." Object Stories are available as audio-visual slideshows on iPads in the gallery next to their storyteller's objects.

About the exhibition:
One Step Away
July 20 – November 25, 2018

Portland is in crisis. Rent increase or illness can lead a person to be one step away from homelessness. One Step Away is a collaboration. Participants directed the exhibition development with help from the museum. Local social service agencies and artists defined the theme and nominated participants. Outside of the Frame, an arts organization mentoring at-risk young people, created media for the exhibition. 
One Step Away is reality. Personal objects and individual testimonies make up the exhibition. Each is an earnest account of lived experience and focuses on the compound, growing issue of housing insecurity in Portland. One Step Away is also an opportunity. Hear the participant’s words, and listen to understand. Become familiar with the support resources provided. Then, challenge yourself to reach out to a friend, a neighbor, or someone else in need.
