Night time can be a fantastic time to catch yabbies, crayfish or any type of crustacean, probably even the American crawfish!
As these crustaceans exist at the bottom of the food chain, they are constantly on guard from predators and naturally feel safer after dark.
Here in Australia, this species of Yabby, the Cherax Destructor has many known predators. Most fish eat them, including Murray cod, Yellowbelly and redfin. Even trout will eat a small yabby.
Then there are the birds. My wife Lauretta filmed some great footage of a Pacific Heron catching yabbies in a dam once., It was unbelievable footage although the yabbyies probably did not find it amusing.
On this trip, I was just hoping to catch a nice specimen of yabby for an upcoming video, and I managed to do just that so this yabbying mission was a great success.
