Catherine Burns is a Professor of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo. Catherines research focuses on ecological interface design (EID). EID is based on principles from both ecological psychology and engineering. The goal of EID is to present the operator with all the information needed to make correct decisions using an interface that is as transparent as possible. EID is showing a lot of promise for systems in healthcare, petrochemical plants, power plants and aviation. The goal of Catherines research is to continue to explore these possibilities and help implement EID in industrial applications.
