This is Kubikop's 'Joule Thief' charging light circuit that I replicated.  Here I show what the signal from the transistor looks like on an oscilloscope.  This pulse is what is doing the work of lighting the LED lights and charging the second battery.  I also use a small radio to listen to the sound of the "Thief".
