Poetic Imagination in Japanese Art: A Symposium
The Mildred Schnitzer Annual Asian Art Program for 2018

Retired Emperor Goyōzei’s Waka Album and “The Poetry-Contest between Different Eras”

Joshua Mostow, Ph.D., Professor, University of British Columbia and Fellow, Royal Society of Canada.

This lecture explores the many elements that comprise an album of calligraphed poems attributed to Retired Emperor Goyōzei (1571 1617) and eleven courtiers, examining the ornamental paper on which the poems are inscribed, the script used, the selection of poems, the genre of poetry-contests, the album format, and the content of the poems themselves, revealing the long and changing culture of Japanese poetry. The talk will also explore Retired Emperor Goyōzei and his personality, and show that the album itself can be seen as
an example of how he championed a revival of imperial court culture.

This lecture was recorded on December 07, 2018 in Portland Art Museum's Whitsell Auditorium
