United Nations, New York, 18 June 2009 - United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he is "deeply concious" of the humanitarian situation in Sri Lanka's refugee camps. Speaking at the Foreign Policy Association's awards gala in New York, Mr Ban said his recent visit to the country was "fully in his best efforts" to convey messages of concern from the international community to the government of Sri Lanka. Mr Ban has been urging the government to begin the reconciliation process, warning that more violence could erupt if the issues and concerns of the minority Tamil population are not addressed.
