A nice loop in the Black Mountains (in Mount Mitchell State Park and Pisgah National Forest) starting at Mount Mitchell summit parking. The hike descends the Mount Mitchell Trail through southern Appalachian spruce-fir forest, then follows the Buncombe Horse Range Trail north to Fork Ridge bald and then Maple Camp Bald, both have great views. The Big Tom Gap Trail connects to the Deep Gap Trail, where I went north to bag Cattail Peak off-trail. The way back passes by views from Big Tom and Mount Craig before finishing at Mount Mitchell. I think I saw less than 15 people on my entire hike excluding Mount Mitchell, kind of surprising for a nice summer Sunday. Hike was 10.2 miles in 6 hours and 20 minutes.
