(Press release: Anonymous) The Minnis administration continues to disregard the voice of the Bahamian people. Talking points such as “We are creating a better tomorrow” and “We are doing what is good for the country” are just words thrown about in an attempt to sway the public opinion in the FNM administration's favor. Regardless of their political persuasion, the people of the Bahamas must not fall for this illusion of noble intention. The benefits from an increase to 12 percent VAT are based solely on numbers on paper. Allow me to repeat that. The benefits from an increase to 12 percent VAT are based solely on numbers on paper. With that said, the reality of the tax increase will be much different than what the FNM administration have been convinced to push onto Bahamians. An increase to 12 percent VAT at a time when the economy already is stalled in its performance will reduce economic activity significantly. This will result in even fewer taxes being brought in, despite an increase in the rate of taxes. It is foolhardy to make a decision that will slow economic activity when the primary means of taxation is based on consumption. Taking deliberate action to slow down consumption is illogical as it is the very economic activity that the government believes that it will make more revenue from, based on a tax rate increase. If it is the people's time, then it is time for the people to not accept willingly the FNM administration's tax increase proposal Furthermore, it has been openly stated that only a few select members of parliament and individuals were privy to the tax increase planning and decision-making. This means that a choice “elite” group of persons selected and agreed upon these tax increases to the exclusion of all others. This is dangerous as The Bahamas is a democracy. Decisions made during the people’s time should not be made by a small group of unknown persons selected by the FNM party. It is extremely unfortunate that Bahamian businesses and corporate groups are being glaringly ignored in this process, despite their expertise and experience in running their respective businesses. Bahamians, if the FNM is saying that it is the people’s time, then which set of people are they truly talking about?
