This is the first of a 5 part series, 1 per day, of my trip to Cornwall from 25th to 29th Aug 2014. I did a 3 day D/C rover on days 2, 3 and 4, and either side of that I just did Ride Cornwall day rovers.

Day 1 actually started at the very beginning of Bank holiday Monday, waiting for the 0037 Night Riviera at Reading. It turned up looking rather yellow - Network Rail's 57305 was working it. Probably due to shortages in their own 57 fleet, owing to recent breakdowns etc. Stuck out like a sore thumb against the fgw rake!
Stayed awake as it was booked to divert via Yeovil, only to find us sail through Castle Cary and down the main instead! I got out at Exeter briefly; we were there early (0230) due to the non-diversion.
I then tried to get some sleep, and for some reason I chose to be a seated passenger this time, which proved to be not as comfortable as I thought! Kept waking up during the long waits at Exeter and Plymouth, and the coach wasn't very warm either.

Woke at Truro, as we passed by the Cathedral, then got some shots at various stops on the way down, but had to give up as the rain started coming down a bit harder.

After a brief pause at Penzance (where my accommodation was), went for a ride back up to Plymouth on the 1047 (1A85).
Next up we see the 1325 XC to Edinburgh (1S53) fail to depart! The driver was unable to draw power, if you listen you can just about hear it trying to throttle. I didn't see what happened after that, as I left again back to Penzance on the 1353 (2C47), which luckily for me had the sprinter swapped for HST (for bank hol extra capacity I believe). Also as it was booked standard class only, first class was declassified, so I had to oblige obviously!
Various stops on the way, arriving into Penzance at around 1610. After checking in to my accommodation, and going for dinner, I thought I'd get a bit more out of the rover and jumped on that evening's up sleeper - once again headed by 57305. Got off at Camborne, and then caught the 2220 XC back into Penzance.

That's it for day 1, day 2 is next...
