Mexico plans new $9.2 billion airport

Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto on Tuesday unveiled plans for a new airport for Mexico City that would be the largest airport in Latin America. The airport is scheduled to be completed in late 2018 or early 2019 and will help ease congestion and delays at Mexico City’s current hub, Benito Juarez International Airport, which is already the second busiest airport in Latin America. Benito Juarez International Airport handled 31.5 million passengers last year. The new airport could handle up to 120 million passengers a year. With its targeted capacity, the new airport could surpass Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson airport as the world's busiest and serve as a regional hub, lowering transport costs and boosting commerce and tourism.
