[Scottsdale, AZ] BlackTree TV traveled to the boulders resort in Arizona to speak to the cast of John Carter. We caught up with budding star Taylor Kitsch who plays the lead role. This year, 2012, marks the 100th anniversary of Burroughs' character John Carter, the original hero featured in the series, who has thrilled generations with his adventures on Mars. Over generations, John Carter has become a heroic paradigm across all forms of pop culture. From novels to comic books, artwork to animation, TV and now cinema, the character has inspired some of the most creative minds of the last century. A fan of the Barsoom series of books since childhood, Academy Award®--winning director/writer Andrew Stanton explains what inspired him to bring "John Carter" to the big screen: "I stumbled across these books at the perfect age. I was about ten and I just fell in love with the concept of a human finding himself on Mars, among amazing creatures in a strange new world. A stranger in a strange land. It was a very romantic aspect of adventure and science fiction. I always thought it would be cool to see this realized on the big screen." Director Andrew Stanton had very specific ideas on how he wanted to cast the movie. "When I see a movie like this, with such big, iconic leading roles, I don't want to already associate the actor with somebody else," he says. "I want to believe the character 100%. When we started the casting process, I felt that finding actors who had yet to be discovered fully would be a real perk. Taylor [Kitsch] is a natural talent; he has incredible instincts and such great, raw qualities to work with. "I felt like the luckiest guy in town to have captured his fire before everyone else had saturated it. He was exactly what I wanted for the role of Carter: viral, charismatic...and dark. And you would be hard-pressed to find an actor with his work ethic—he brings 150% every time he has to come up to the plate," Stanton adds. Taylor Kitsch credits Andrew Stanton's take on Edgar Rice Burroughs' original source material for the complexiy of the John Carter character. "What Andrew Stanton has done is taken the base of Burroughs' work, including the lack of gravity, the strength Carter finds he has and everything that Mars represents in the original source material and then gone into further depth with the characters and their backgrounds," he comments. "He has given me so much to dive into—it has been great to draw so much information about my character from his script."
