Description: First time meeting of this particular line-up featuring: Paul Dunmall on saxes, Barry Edwards & Philip Gibbs on guitars and Mark Sanders on drums. Although under-recognized guitar great Philip Gibbs can be found on nearly fifty discs with Paul Dunmall, even lesser-known guitarist Barry Edwards can be heard on just one previous date with Dunmall. The only other time we've heard from Mr. Edwards is an amazing but obscure fusion trio named Trio NaNG NAak who have one disc also found on FMR. Mark Sanders is one of the England's best and most in-demand drummers, having worked with Dunmall, Elton Dean, Evan Parker & Jah Wobble on dozens of dates.
Even with no bassist involved both guitarists keep busy swirling around one another with layers on of inter-connected lines buzzing. On "AA" Dunmall uses that swell Trane-like tone on his trusty tenor while Sanders spins a web on his cymbals. It sounds as if there were two versions of John McLaughlin playing together, one from his 'Extrapolation' era and one from his 'Devotion' album sound. There are a number of sections of just the two guitars and drums that are astonishing, the interplay is free yet focused and often intense beyond belief. The quartet do a fine job of shifting between duos & trios seamlessly. For "AB" Dunmall & Gibbs spin furiously while the drums erupt between and at times connecting both guitars. Edwards still has a rich, older fusion-style sustained tone with which he wails further back in the mix while Gibbs cuts loose with a thinner, quicker and more articulated style up close. There are also a few sections of mind-blowing tenor sax & drums duets that recall those glorious moments of 'Interstellar Space' (Trane & Rashied Ali in 1967).
