I'm working on a SSTC based on Steve Ward's design (http://stevehv.4hv.org/SSTC5.htm). The primary coil is only running on 30V right now, so the sparks are small, but the voltage is high enough to drive an "ion windmill". This is just a bit of wire twiested to an "S" shape and able to rotate around its middle... when the coil is running, electrons stream from the points at the 2 ends of the "S" and spin the windmill round.
The coil is driven from an oscillator based on a 555 timer and I am playing with the frequency and duty cycle causing the changes in pitch you can hear.
