Sven Magnus Øen Carlsen (Norwegian: [svɛn ˈmɑŋnʉs øːn ˈkɑːɭsn̩]; born 30 November 1990) is a Norwegian chess grandmaster and the current World Chess Champion. His peak rating of 2882, achieved in 2014, is the highest in history.

A chess prodigy, Carlsen tied for first place in the World U12 Chess Championship in 2002. Shortly after turning 13, he finished first in the C group of the Corus chess tournament, and earned the grandmaster title a few months later. Carlsen became World Champion in 2013 by defeating Viswanathan Anand. In the following year, he retained his title against Anand, and won both the 2014 World Rapid Championship and World Blitz Championship, thus becoming the first player to simultaneously hold all three titles. In 2016, he defended his title against Sergey Karjakin.

Fabiano Luigi Caruana (born July 30, 1992) is an Italian-American chess grandmaster. A chess prodigy, he became a grandmaster at the age of 14 years, 11 months and 20 days—the youngest grandmaster in the history of both Italy and the United States at the time. He will play a match with Magnus Carlsen for the World Chess Championship in November 2018.

Born in Miami to Italian-American parents, Caruana grew up in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and started playing chess at age 5. He played for the United States until 2005, when he transferred to Italy. He earned his grandmaster title in 2007, and in the same year won his first Italian Chess Championship, a feat he repeated in 2008, 2010 and 2011. He won the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting in 2012, 2014 and 2015. Having won the FIDE Grand Prix 2014–15, Caruana qualified for the Candidates Tournament 2016, where he was runner-up to Sergey Karjakin. He won the 2016 US Chess Championship, and represented the US on board 1 at the 42nd Chess Olympiad, winning team gold and individual bronze. He won the London Chess Classic in 2017. He won the Candidates Tournament 2018, becoming the first American challenger for the undisputed World Chess Championship since Bobby Fischer in 1972. In the run-up to the championship match, Caruana won the 5th Grenke Chess Classic, the 6th Norway Chess, and Sinquefield Cup 2018 (sharing first with Carlsen and Levon Aronian).

The World Chess Championship 2018 is an upcoming chess match between the reigning world champion since 2013, Magnus Carlsen, and challenger Fabiano Caruana to determine the World Chess Champion. The 12-game match, organized by FIDE and its commercial partner Agon, will be played in London, at The College in Holborn, between 9 and 28 November 2018

Caruana qualified as challenger by winning the 2018 Candidates Tournament. This was an eight player, double round-robin tournament; played in Berlin, Germany, on March 10–28, 2018.[4]

The Championship match between Magnus Carlsen and Fabiano Caruana will be held from 9 to 28 November 2018 in London, United Kingdom, at The College in Holborn.
he match is a best of 12 games. The time control for the games is 100 minutes for the first 40 moves, 50 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game plus an additional 30 seconds per move starting from move 1. Players cannot agree to a draw before Black's 30th move.[8][9]

If the match is tied after 12 games, tie breaks will be played on the final day in the following order, if necessary:
