This shows exactly why I usually bury my tomato plants 6 to 8 inches under the soil. The buried stem forms lots of new roots to help the plant grow better. I garden in zone 6b. We have some pretty challenging weather sometimes. I don't claim to be an expert, so you will see my successes and my failures.
