(2 Dec 2018) German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Rabbi Teicatel Yuhed lit the first candles of a giant menorah in Berlin on Sunday evening to celebrate the beginning of Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights. Rabbis of the Jewish education centre, Chabad Berlin, put up the 10-metre menorah, the candelabrum used for Hanukkah, in front of Berlin's iconic Brandenburg Gate on Friday. The eight-night celebration commemorates the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the second century BC after its desecration by a pagan ruler, and symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and of democracy over tyranny.
