Rules for Robots?: Governance of Artificial Intelligence

Computers were invented to improve human performance. They are powerful tools, but they still cannot “think.” Eventually this will change, and that raises some complex issues for economics, security and society. Earlier phases of automation brought greater wealth and more jobs. Automation makes people more productive and technology makes societies richer. Innovation, with artificial intelligence (AI) at the forefront, may be the best source for future growth. Will this phase—AI—be any different? The immediate problem is not killer robots but how we educate people to be productive in an artificial intelligence economy, how we invest in AI research, and how we allocate the additional wealth AI creates. This panel discussion will talk about the promise of AI and what America needs to consider as AI takes on a larger role.
