United Nations, New York, 16 June 2009 - Noon briefing by the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General. The United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR, says there are now 42 million people that have been forcibly uprooted by conflict and persecution worldwide. The agency says that while its latest report shows a drop of about 700,000 from the previous year, current conflicts in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Somalia are already off-setting the progress made in bringing the figures down. UNHCR's report "Global Trends" also shows a sharp slowdown in repatriation and the prolonged nature of some conflicts.
