General Assembly President "deeply outraged" by Honduran coup d'etat

United Nations, New York, 29 June 2009 - The President of the United Nations General Assembly, Miguel d'Ecosto Brockmann has expressed "deep personal outrage" at the coup d'etat that took place in Honduras yesterday.

Mr Brockmann told the special General Assembly plenary session to dicuss the events taking place in Honduras, that this coup d'etat was an attack on democracy in the Central American nation. He desribed the coup and resulting political instability as a "throw back to another era" of politics in the region.

The General Assembly convened a special plenary session to discuss the situation in Honduras after a number of member states voiced concern.

In a statement on Sunday afternoon, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his deep concern for the latest developments. He also voiced strong support for the country's democratic institutions and condemned the arrest of the Republic's President,  José Manuel Zelaya Rosales.

According to media reports, President José Manuel Zelaya Rosales was overthrown yesterday, when a referendum was slated to be held on changing the Honduran constitution.
