Isakovsky's words (1943) Performed by Pyatnitsky State Russian Folk Choir When Nazi Germany attacked the Soviet Union in June 1941, Smolensk lay in the direct path of the advancing German armies on their goal of taking Moscow. Despite fierce resistance by the Soviets, the town fell at the end of July, but it had taken almost two months to do do this, thus giving the Russian time to further defend Moscow. Residents of the city actively helped the defense: they dug trenches and anti-tank ditches, arranged roadblocks and barricades on the streets, and looked after the wounded. During the occupation of the city, Smolensk suffered great damage. Industrial complexes were destroyed with over 90% of civilian homes, together with hospitals, water supply and schools ruined... During the period of occupation, over 135,000 Soviet prisoners of war and civilians were killed. Smolensk was finally liberated in September 1943. In 1945, the city received the title of Hero City.
