Popful Mail: Magical Fantasy Adventure. This is the opening for the PC98 version, which was released in Japan in 1992 by Falcom.  It's a bit different from the Sega CD version (which was the only one released in the west). The game utilizes the bump system for attacking. Just like with Ys you need to "bump" an enemy with your sword to defeat it. If an enemy has a shield then you can't really do much from the front. Luckily you can jump over enemies and attack them from behind. It takes some getting used to. I think it works better in Ys since the perspective is 3/4 overhead view.

The game is a side scrolling action RPG with three playable characters. Besides the main character Mail, there's Tatt the magician and Gaw the... Gaw I guess. He looks like a dragon blob. 

This version is Japanese only and as far as I know there is no  English translation. If you want to play the game in English your only bet is the Sega CD version. Popful Mail also came out on PC88, SNES and Turbo CD. The PC 88 version may be identical. Or at least it looks that way. But the other versions all have some differences between them.

You might notice that the life meter for characters and enemies is virtually identical to the one used in another Falcom title for the MSX, Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family, which was released in North America on the NES as Legacy of the Wizard.
