Small and mid-sized companies have always formed a crucial part of German industry and appear to be holding the fort as the global economic crisis hits the country. Most of the 3.5 million SMEs are helping to stabilize the labour market in their determination to keep their workforces.One third of SMEs in Germany in fact claim to be benefiting from the global economic crisis. The basic philosophy is: look to the future instead of wallowing in the past. This includes realigning and targeting new markets. Lay-offs are to be avoided,with retraining the preferred option.
